The Indian numbering system
- 1,000 = one thousand
- 1,00,000 = one lakh (a hundred thousand)
- 10,00,000 = ten lakh (one million)
- 1,00,00,000 = one crore (ten million)
- 1,00,00,00,000 = one hundred crore (one billion)
- Above that, crores are counted in the same system: 1,000 crore, 1 lakh crore.
Writing an amount on a cheque
Write the amount in words on the line after "Rupees", start as close to the left as you can and end with "Only", so nothing can be added later. Draw a line through any empty space. Many banks reject cheques where the amount in words and in figures do not match, so check both before you sign.
